Background
Rural townships are recognized as an important heritage of Hong Kong as they are
among the earliest settlements in the territory. Sha Tau Kok Town, being
located within the Frontier Closed Area is unique as compared with other rural
townships in the New Territories. The tranquility and the rural setting of Sha
Tau Kok Town and surrounding areas have been well retained over the years. It
would provide a good opportunity for promoting eco-tourism and cultural tourism.
Planning Department has therefore commissioned Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong
Ltd. (Arup) in April 2009 to carry out the Consultancy Study, Agreement No. CE
48/2008 (TP) Study on the Enhancement of the Sha Tau Kok Rural Township and
Surrounding Areas ¡V Feasibility Study.
The objective of the Study is to formulate an Integrated Area Improvement Plan,
with a view to enhancing the physical environment of Sha Tau Kok Town and its
surrounding areas. The Study will also assess the tourism potential of the
area, taking into account the Frontier Closed Area status of Sha Tau Kok Town,
and examine the possibility of enhancing its connection with other tourist
attractions in the North East New Territories.
The Study will be conducted in three phases:

A two-stage community engagement programme will be carried out in parallel with
the study process to ensure timely incorporation of public views in the
formulation of the proposals and plan.
