Section 6 : Retail Facilities

  1. Retailing can be defined as the selling of goods in small quantities as distinct from wholesale trading where goods are bought and sold in bulk to or from warehouse, go downs or bulk carriers.
  1. The guidelines on the provision of retail facilities are summarized below :

Markets  
(i) In Private Residential Area(excluding HOS/PSPS) 1 stall per 55 - 65 households or approx. 40 - 45 stalls per 10 000 population equivalent.

Site area (m2/person) based on 40 - 45 stalls per 10 000 population : -
Single-storey : 0.065 - 0.073
2 storey : 0.040 - 0.045

Optimum site area for one market (about 200 stalls) : -
Single-storey : 3000m2
2 storey : 2000m2

(ii) In Public Housing Estates Approximately 12% of total retail floor space and could vary according to local characteristics.
Cooked Food Stalls/Centres  
(i) In Private Residential Areas (excluding HOS/PSPS areas) No set standard
(ii) In Industrial Areas 0.06m2 net site area per worker.
