
The Planning Department attended the 7th Metropolitan Planning International Conference held in Shanghai on 9 December 2024, to strengthen in-depth exchanges between Shanghai and Hong Kong in the field of urban management. With the theme “Metropolitan Development: Innovation and Transformation”, the conference explored various issues related to the spatial development of large metropolises.
The Deputy Director of Planning/Territorial, Mr Tom Yip, delivered a report titled “A Liveable, Competitive, and Sustainable Asia’s World City – The Future Development of Hong Kong”, sharing the development strategies of “Hong Kong 2030+” and the Northern Metropolis as well as how to address Hong Kong’s challenges of double-ageing of population and buildings, shortage of developable land and climate change. Mr Yip also participated in a roundtable symposium, exchanging ideas on metropolitan planning and development with planning authorities and experts from London, Paris, Singapore, Seoul, Shanghai and Hamburg. In addition to showcasing Hong Kong’s efforts in promoting sustainable planning and urban design as well as a development direction integrating smart, environmentally friendly and resilient infrastructure systems and smart mobility, he also drew on the experiences of other international metropolises.
