Development in Tai Po New Town
Population and Housing Mix
There is a variety of housing in Tai Po to suit a range of income levels and housing aspirations.
According to the Hong Kong 2016 Population By-census, the population of the Tai Po New Town includes
about 140 900 persons residing in private permanent housing, about 45 100 persons in public rental
housing, about 79 400 in subsidised sale flats , and the remainder of about 5 300 persons in others

(including private temporary housing and non-residential housing).
Upon the planned development, the overall flat mix ratio of the New Town will be about 51:49 between
public (including public rental housing and subsidised sale flats) and private permanent housing (including
village housing). The total planned population in Tai Po New Town will be about 318 600.
Public Housing
The first public rental estate in the Tai Po New Town, Tai Yuen Estate (Figure 5), was completed
in 1981 and the latest public rental estate, Po Heung Estate (Figure 6), was completed in 2016. At
present, there are altogether seven public rental estates, nine Home Ownership Schemes (HOS)
and three Private Sector Participation Schemes (PSPS) in the New Town. Proposed public housing
developments, with a target population of about 20 000, will be developed along and near Chung Nga
Road to the north of the Town Centre.
