Duration of Stay
The chart below shows that People living in Hong Kong tended to lengthen their stay in the
Mainland. The average daily number of same-day trips dropped from the peak of 249 500 trips
(72.8 per cent) in 2009 to 164 400 trips (51.4 per cent) in 2017, while the number of trips
lasted for one to two nights exhibited an upward trend from 59 400 trips (17.4 per cent) in
2009 to 116 300 trips (36.4 per cent) in 2017.

Frequent trip makers
Frequent trip makers are those who usually travelled at least once a week between Hong Kong
and the Mainland. The 2017 Survey found that there were 721 400 frequent trip makers with
a decrease of 17.6 per cent when compared with 875 900 frequent trip makers in the 2015
Survey. The following chart shows different types of frequent trip makers and their numbers
found in the series of the Surveys. Their usual trip purposes were most commonly for leisure
and business.
