for People living in other places was relatively less obvious with a subtle increase from an
average daily of 11 700 trips in 1999 to 13 600 trips in 2017.

Trip Purposes
The trip purposes to the Mainland for cross-boundary passenger trips between Hong Kong
and the Mainland made by People living in Hong Kong from 1999 to 2017 are shown in the
following chart. Leisure trips constituted the largest share with an average daily of 146 200
trips (45.7 per cent) in 2017, followed by trips for visiting relatives and friends (an average daily
of 92 200 trips or 28.8 per cent). Business and work trips displayed a declining trend in the
last few years, which could be related to the worldwide economic downturn and the relocation
of industries away from the Pearl River Delta Region.
