Transport Modes
The majority of cross-boundary passenger trips between Hong Kong and the Mainland were
made by land-based transports. In particular, boundary trains remained the most popular mode
of transport which recorded an average daily of 318 400 trips (47.8 per cent) in 2017. The
other land-based transport modes including coaches, shuttle buses, private cars and franchised
buses/green minibuses/taxis together made up an average daily of 267 800 trips (40.2 per cent)
in 2017.

Passenger Types
For the analysis of characteristics of cross-boundary passenger trips in the Survey, the passengers
were divided into four groups based on their usual place of residence as follows:
• People living in Hong Kong;
• Hong Kong Residents living in the Mainland;
• Visitors from the Mainland; and
• People living in other places.
The following chart illustrates the average daily number of cross-boundary passenger trips made
by the four passenger types between 1999 and 2017. People living in Hong Kong remained as
the largest group with an average daily of 319 800 trips (48 per cent of all passenger trips) in the
2017 Survey. Visitors from the Mainland showed an increasing trend from an average daily of
14 100 trips (5 per cent) in 1999 to 216 600 trips (32.5 per cent) in 2017. An overall increase
